Hi, I'm Jessica Wilkins,

and I'm an expert in Human Factors

I’m passionate about my work and making systems, technology, and the built environment easy to use for everyone.

Career Highlights

Thick Green Straight Single Marker Line
  • Experience as a Human Factors Research Associate
  • Pursuing a Master’s of Science degree in Human Factors Psychology
  • Led a usability evaluation for a client app and generated evidence-based design recommendations
  • Co-leading a project assessing the accessibility of the built environment of the University of Calgary
  • Investigated how to improve nursing skills with a gaze-focused technique
  • Researching universal design of asynchronous video interviews for individuals with ADHD

Human Factors Research Associate

During my position as a Human Factors Research Associate at Ward of the 21st Century (W21C) I had the opportunity to lead, from conception to completion, a usability test for a client’s product.

Usability Evaluation

I led the project of assessing a client’s mental-health based application, completing a heuristic evaluation, conducting interviews with end-users, evaluating the data, and returning action-based insights and design recommendations to the happy client to improve the usability of the product.

UCAN Project Co-Lead

As co-lead on the University of Calgary’s Accessibility Network (UCAN) team, I investigated the accessibility of UCalgary’s built environment through a mixed-methods approach.

Mixed Methods Accessibility Assessment

Myself along with the UCAN team conducted:

  1. An environmental scan to find all existing information on accessibility at Canadian Universities,
  2. Surveyed expert access advisors on their opinions of accessibility improvement needs across Canada,
  3. Conducted interviews with students who identify as having a physical disability,
  4. Integrated a mobility wheelchair lab exercise into an undergraduate course to identify issues and add support to the voice of the disabled students

Results & Presentation

Based on our findings, the UCAN team generated a set of design recommendations for the university, for example implementing more easily readable signage on campus.

These results have been communicated to various university groups, and have recently been presented at the international CAPDHHE Conference, which highlights work on disability awareness in higher education. This is an ongoing project with many goals and moving parts.

PICFAST Eye-Tracking Project

Lead the data collection and research activities investigating how to improve student nursing skills of peripheral intravenous catheterization (PIVCs)

first attempt success (PICFAST),

using a gaze-focused technique.

Along with a small team, I conceptualized the research design, carried out PIVC trials using eye-tracking technology, and created a clinical trial protocol to continue the research with the goal of implementing new educational techniques into nurses training.

UD for AVIs and ADHD

Thick Green Straight Single Marker Line

For my Master’s of Science thesis, I’m currently investigating the impact of universal design (UD) on asynchronous video interviews (AVIs) for individuals with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

This two-part study will survey working adults with ADHD to gauge design preferences, then implement them into a mixed-methods experimental design. This project will determine the impact of UD for an ADHD population and for everyone, in the age of increasingly popular AVIs.

I'd love to hear from you.
